The Art and Design Department
Current teaching staff within the Art Department at BCCS are: Ms Eve Simmons, Head of Art and Design, Mrs Liz Turner, Teacher of Art and Graphic Design and Miss Abi Southwick, Teacher of Art and Textiles.
The department is housed over several floors of adjoining buildings in purpose-built facilities which include:
- a large open plan Fine Art teaching room
- a Sixth Form / A level art studio space
- a Textiles teaching room
- a Graphic Communication teaching room
- a department office that provides work space for teaching staff.
- a large walk in storage room for securing students artwork and stock / materials.
The Department benefits from 20 networked laptops with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator amongst other software. There are 8 Desktop computers in the Sixth form studio. Each room is resourced according to the teaching specialism; the Textiles room has 16 Bernina sewing machines plus equipment to enable screen printing. Exam level students are encouraged to make a financial contribution towards receiving a pack of their own materials to use during the completion of their course. An extensive range of books and visual materials are kept in the art office and in teaching areas to support students in completing visual research.
All teaching groups are taught in mixed ability groupings.
In year 7 and 8 all students have 1 hour of art a week. Students also experience 1 hour of art textiles a week (for half the year and then they move to Design technology). In year 9 students currently access the Art and Design curriculum via a carousel programme that consists of Art, Art Textiles and Design Technology, although the intention is to move to the same system as year 7 and 8 from September 2019.
Currently at GCSE level, the Art Department offers the AQA Fine Art, AQA Graphic Communication and AQA Art Textiles courses. Art and Design endorsements are popular options subjects for our GCSE students. It is an area that has grown significantly over the last 7 years and continues to grow.
At A level, the Art Department offers the following AQA endorsements: Fine Art and Graphic Communication. This is taught as a linear 2 year course. A high percentage of our A level students continue to study Art and Design either at foundation and / or university level.
Attainment at KS4 and 5 is outstanding.
At present the Art and Design department offers a range of support at lunch times and after school.
Our city centre location enables our students to easily access exhibitions at local galleries and museums. In previous years we have also taken students to London to visit the Tate museums, National Galleries and the Royal Academy.
Annually the Art Department enter students art work in to the Bristol Cathedral Bristol Schools’ Art Competition, sponsored by Bristol Savages and have experienced much success in the competition.
In addition the Art Department celebrates the work of the GCSE and A level students’ in an annual summer Art exhibition. This is a popular event that is well attended by students, parents, staff, governors and other members of the school community.
You will be an outstanding classroom practitioner with creative ideas, willing to contribute to the development and growth of a very successful department. We welcome applications from all art and design backgrounds, although we are particularly interested in candidates with strengths in Fine Art, Graphics and Textiles. We are a small team and so the willingness to represent the art department in the wider school context will be vital.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach across the full ability range at KS3, KS4 and KS5 to develop students’ confidence and fluency in art, design, textiles and graphics. You will have the highest expectations of students behaviour and outcomes and be able to inspire all abilities through your strong subject knowledge and your own art and design skills.
There is an outstanding programme of continuing professional development and in-service training in the school.
